Hate to tell you, but Canada also has income tax. But at least our tax goes to useful services (most of the time).

Vancouver, Washington. Its at the very south of Washington state, just a few minutes drive from the Oregon border and Portland. It’s almost intentionally confusing.

Because Washington has no state income tax but does have a high sales tax and Oregon has no sales tax, but a high income tax, its a “no taxes” hack to live and work in Vancouver, then work and shop in Oregon. Its also a dick move, as you get to Oregon across these large, expensive bridges you pay literally $0 dollars to maintain.

You basically leech off two states resources while paying very little into their coffers.

If you work in Oregon, you’re paying Oregon income tax. The hack is to live and work in Vancouver while doing all your shopping in Oregon.

It’s only a hack in the sense that anyone can lie on their taxes and not to pay the use tax which is sales tax on out of state purchases used in Washington.

I don’t know anyone at all who pays the use tax. I entirely forgot it was a thing.

They’d probably only be able to catch you on large purchases like a car or boat where you have to register them.

It seems like you’d be spending more on gas / time value than you would by paying the sale taxes on small/medium purchases?

Actually… WA and OR have a sneaky deal where if you buy it in Oregon and then try to register it in WA, you owe the taxes to WA anyway.

Kinda crap if you ask me.

I think it’s completely fair really. I mean you’re already getting mad benefits from leeching from two states, surely you want to pay something towards public services where you live?

                • From that particular perspective, property taxes may be the fairest of the tax “flavors” since it is directly tied to your place of residency and can be localized based on the public services in your area. And indeed, this is largely how New Hampshire functions, though they do also have some other revenue such as excise taxes.

I don’t oppose property taxes at all, I just oppose they way they’re used for funding an area such as for schools. This method insures the poorest zip codes have the worst schools.

I think billionaires should cough up the cash and pay it all. Besides, we are in a thread about how that money was misused, so how can you actually expect me to want to pay… for… documented… misuse… of funds.

              • It’s a use tax. Legally speaking, you are supposed to do it for other items too, like if you live in WA but buy a television in OR. Just that televisions don’t require registration but cars do.

It’s basically on the north side of the river that is the border between the states. Think 5min drive to enter the state, another 5-10min to Portland.

Ahh, that makes much more sense. Not the first time Vancouver, Washington has confused me!
