They were almost all posted on April 13th, and they all drop the “brand name” of the product in just really unnatural ways. This is 1,000% a bot.
Do go visit the profile though. The sex toy reviews are pretty funny.

Just being open source is not enough to solve this problem. You would need a record of your “home instance” stored somewhere that all Lemmy instances would always have access to it. Ignoring the security implications of that, you still can’t use browser storage or cookies for that storage. In browsers, those storage mechanisms are restricted to the websites that stored them in the first place. Browser extensions have their own storage, so they don’t have this limitation.
I can’t think of an architectural solution to this problem without a browser extension.
The closest alternative that could be upstreamed is what Mastodon does, which is prompt the user to enter their home instance every time they try to interact with something while not logged in. An upstream solution can never be fully automatic like a browser extension, but this may be “close enough.”
They explain it in the video. They already use algorithms to detect if things are buildings or not.
But if their algorithm can’t make a determination or is uncertain below a certain threshold, they send it to Maptcha to get a bulk human opinion.
I’m really curious to learn how you get calls in so many different languages. I could definitely see Spanish, English, and maybe Vietnamese all being spoken in a general geographic area, but you listed a lot of diverse languages. Pretty cool if that’s really all within one area!

OF requires strict government issued ID verification in some jurisdictions. Patreon does not, at least in the US.
That should be your deciding factor already. No one should have their privacy invaded just to send you a few bucks a month.
I don’t think I’ve been banned, but I did a similar thing. I requested all my data from Reddit, then used that list of comment/post IDs to mass-edit them. I think I’m in the clear because I used the official third party API, with an official “app.” If you used the private API or instrumented this via the browser, that may be why you were banned.
Anyway, if you or someone else wants their full history, Reddit will give it to you via a data export request.
This was the point of the protest. Reddit is all over search engine results, especially Google. If people can’t get their answers from a random Reddit search result, the Reddit listings will eventually be deprioritized in favor of other, more reliable sources.

But on Lemmy, if I am on an instance that federates with Threads, and I don’t want Threads.net to get a copy of my content or posts (or have my content or posts show up on Threads.net in the future), then tough shit for me, my only option is to either go silent or move to an instance that has defederated from Threads.
People keep making the email argument, but it is not the same thing at all. I don’t think it’s fair for a large percentage of lemmy.world’s users to not have a voice in a decision that will absolutely impact them, nor is it fair to have a stance of “then leave then.”

It’s not an assumption. The vanilla Signal app has code in it that disables itself after a certain period without updates. Unless they removed that from this app, then this will do the same thing.
Why is everyone up in arms about this? The abuse of their free service was rampant. This isn’t a core project change, this is just a measure to keep a version of the project up for free without completely taking it down. They don’t even have a way to monetize this. An alternative was to simply shut it down and only allow you to self host it.
I self host my Jitsi instance, but as a privacy nut, I don’t see a problem with this. Absolute privacy cannot always coexist with free anonymous services. Don’t blame Jitsi, blame the people who ruined it for everyone else.
Unfortunately, there is not a lot of information to go off of here. I was able to upgrade to 0.18.4 with no hitches, and I haven’t seen similar reports of this.
Are you using any custom configs? Do the logs for just the Lemmy service show you anything of note?

In the past, Lemmy itself has had some strange edge cases causing crashes, such as an improper audit log value causing the entire audit log to fail. It’s possible this is a similar case, in which case you may need to file a bug on Lemmy’s tracker.
You are welcome to file an issue with some more information and logs, but if this is an issue caused by a bug in Lemmy, unfortunately I won’t be able to fix it.

I’ve been using Lawnchair for a while, but development is so slow, and they are so consistently behind Android updates, that I think I’ve given up on custom launchers and will just use the stock AOSP launcher.
It is disappointing, but Google has made it so you don’t get the fancy recents carousel unless you use the stock launcher. Lawnchair does support that by pretending to be the stock launcher, but Lawnchair only supports up to Android 12, and Android 14 is about to come out. There hasn’t been a hint of Lawnchair even starting development of Android 13 compatibility, so I’m not confident they’ll be able to keep up with 14 and beyond.
